in chains before all this.
Escaped on parole with nothing
except the shirt on his back
and the shoes on his feet.
Now I see him attached to chainlink
and I think he recognizes me.
Sniffs in through his nose deeply
My eyes see him smiling
and I wish there was glass between us
and phones in our hands
or letters reminding us
we work better together from a distance
He doesn't attack me.
Exhausted his pull on the tether
hours before, he seems smarter than the rest.
Able to accept this.
When I pull the trigger,
I imagine him thanking me
for not letting anyone call him prisoner.
