9/30 (a Rubáiyát)

Today the sun blazes merrily through a cloudless sky
Deceived by warmth and hunger we dared to try
A sortie, both for remnants of civilization and food
Our water had browned, soon the well would be dry.

With the banks now collapsed, all the cash we'd accrued
Sat dormant and valueless with the economy unglued
We'd traded away guns early on, thanks to foolish fear
We have only one left, and two swords, sharp and crude.

We discover the new currencies are weapons, food, beer
Fooled by balmy weather that bade us try to leave here
Our frugality conserving the bullet supply
Did not last. She is bitten. My Love, my Dear...
