spilling out the grocery store,
the souls peeled, rinds discarded.
They were killed by the living,
that much is certain.
It's the same scene at every one.
Death by hunger,
but not their own.
The stores are empty as well.
I never appreciated logistics until now.
With the supply chain displaced
it's amazing to see how fast
we can consume. It's been a week,
and this whole city is bare.
I will have to leave it as well; my food supply
is dwindling, the only thing I could find in this store
was a packet of cashews that slipped
between the shelves, and
prospects for the rest of the city
don't look very promising.
Tonight, I will go.
Tonight, I will sneak from out the teeth of skyscrapers
cross under the steel ribs of bridges
and trek down the freeway vertebrae
to someplace where anything grows.
