So many apocalypses
have been called since the
dawn of religion, it should
be no surprise that the
Zombie Apocalypse, foretold
by filmmaker to slam poet
from A. Romero to Zack Snyder
was equally overblown.
It's not that things weren't crazy.
We saw the carnage on other streets.
Wild Twitter feeds, screaming radio,
frantic helicopter footage.
And we had our own stories
before we city dwellers
picked up hardware tools,
some for the first time ever.
But most chaos was taken from
warmer areas. Here it was
winter in the northeast
One day, a friend of a friend
from Buffalo emailed photos of
30 inchies of snow, zombies
waist deep, some fallen over
unable to even land.
Likes snakes in the cold
I joked, even if I wasn't sure
that was the whole reason,
but this was a poet talking,
not a scientist, all of which
were in hiding if not eaten.
It was the first time even friends
with family in the south
laughed since ground zero,
which was what some people
were calling the first day
of the outbreak, showing
once again, that the news writers
were holed up or eaten,
broadcasters cues and FCC regs.
thrown to the wind.
Someone made a joke
that we should start a pool
and turn on talk radio to see
who they would be blaming.
Gay marriage? African American?
Ruined health care?
Or would it be Glenn Beck
screaming "OBAMMAAAA!"
over and over.
I won't quote what we heard
from Rush Limbaugh.
You can Youtube it
if you really want to hear it again.
It was then, I think, that many
of us decided to wait things out
if only for a week
before we start any culling.
Massachusetts was seen as
being well-off and smug
while the rest of America suffered.
Why not play up to type?
